Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and a very good morning.

It is a pleasure for me to be here for the graduation of FSTEP Batch 28, the first cohort for 2025.

Today signifies more than the successful completion of a rigorous programme; it heralds the beginning of your professional journeys in the financial services industry. It is a moment to pause and reflect. But more importantly, it is the threshold of a future abundant with promise and potential.

Graduates,

You are stepping into a world that is no longer merely fast-paced—it is exponentially evolving. Innovations in technology, finance, and governance are redefining the boundaries of what is possible. In this ever-shifting landscape, adaptability is no longer optional; it is imperative.

In this knowledge-driven era, the capacity to learn, unlearn, and relearn will be your greatest asset. What you have acquired through FSTEP is not just a foundation—it is a launchpad. Staying relevant will demand perpetual curiosity, intellectual humility, and the courage to stretch beyond your comfort zones.

I say this not as a distant bystander, but as a lifelong learner. At the age of 86, I continue to immerse myself in the frontiers of thought—engaging with topics such as Generative AI, Cybersecurity, ESG frameworks, Green Sukuk financing, Central Bank Digital Currencies, Shariah-compliant FinTech, Open Banking, and Blockchain technologies etc – otherwise I will be irrelevant.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Let that be your compass. In a world defined by volatility and transformation, lifelong learning is not merely a professional obligation—it is a personal philosophy and a national necessity.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

FSTEP was conceived with a clear vision: to nurture a new generation of professionals who will serve as the bedrock of Malaysia’s financial services industry. Since its inception, and through our steadfast collaboration with Bank Negara Malaysia, the programme has continued to evolve in both depth and relevance.

This 3-month intensive training saw Batch 28 immersing themselves in a diverse and forward-looking curriculum. From Regulatory Compliance and ESG to Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Design Thinking, FinTech, and a timely new module on “Banking in a Geopolitical World”, the breadth of exposure has been exceptional.

Beyond the classroom, participants engaged in experiential learning through the ‘Holistic Banker’ retreat at Eagle Ranch Resort—where leadership, resilience, and collaboration were forged through team-building activities and physical challenges. This holistic approach ensures that we are not merely developing capable professionals—but well-rounded individuals equipped to lead in complexity.

Equally commendable are your contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through Project Catalyst. Your projects—whether enhancing flood protection for animal shelters, creating empowerment programmes for individuals with autism, or supporting single mothers—demonstrate that leadership is also about compassion, having Good Values, social responsibility and impact beyond the bottom line.

I urge all of you to take time today to visit the exhibition area, and witness firsthand the spirit of service, creativity, and community that your projects embody.

To the 63 graduates of Batch 28, I offer my congratulations. Over these months, you have embraced challenge and grown in knowledge, confidence and character. As you now transition into the professional world, carry with you the values instilled through FSTEP—excellence, adaptability, and integrity.

As Chairman of both the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers and the Asian Banking School, I strongly encourage you to continue your professional development. Pursue the Chartered Banker qualification, and for those who seek deeper strategic insight, the Chartered Banker MBA is a powerful next step that blends leadership, governance, and global banking excellence.

To our six sponsoring financial institutions—thank you for your belief in these young talents. Your support is crucial to shaping the future of Malaysia’s financial ecosystem. And to Bank Negara Malaysia, our enduring gratitude for your vision and commitment to developing industry-ready professionals.

A word of appreciation to our faculty members, learning partners, and the dedicated FSTEP team at the Asian Banking School. Your tireless efforts have once again cultivated a cohort of future-ready professionals poised to make a meaningful difference.

To the graduates—go forth with courage, with clarity, and with conviction. Carry the spirit of lifelong learning wherever your journey takes you, and never stop striving for excellence. The future of finance is not something you inherit—it is something you shape.

Congratulations, Batch 28!

Thank you.
